Here is another example of how one can take words from documents and create poetry. This particular poem was created based off of The Book of the Dead, written by Muriel Rukeyser. Rukeyser's Book Of The Dead explores the 1929-1932 outbreak of silicosis, a fatal lung disease, in the Hawk’s Nest tunneling project in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. We used her concept of creating poetry from documents inspired by this tragic event and watched a documentary that was made back then about putting an end to silicosis. We were asked to watch the documentary and write down any words or phrases that we thought could be turned into poetry afterwards. This is what I came up with...
Stop Silicosis
Exposure.
8 hours a day
day after day
year after year.
Cannot escape the dust.
Silicotic lungs.
Cure for the disease?
None.

Flint, granite, silica
Dangerous dust producers
Employed, totally unprotected.
Fine particles of dust.
Short of breath, sick.
Scar tissue forms, small at first.
Then magnified.
I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.
